Dying my black hair to red.??? Lost?

Ive always dyed my own hair. But never something colorful.....but I need a change and dont want any color BUT red...Just want to try it out. What do I need to do? My hair is very strong, even though I've dyed it in the past. The materials I have now are from Sallys Beauty supply; Protein Filler; red red, Developer vol 40, Ion: Light Intense Red, ....thats about it. Do i NEED to bleach my hair? Or will the developer vol 40 lift it enough? Im guessin it wont? I just need to know if I should just pay to let a professional bleach it...i'd rather really do it myself...Any suggestions?
