Smallville vs Superman?

So I'm currently watching Superman Returns and was wondering, in the original Superman stuff is Lex supposed to be older than Clark? Which leads me to, why then, in Smallville Clark and Lex are the same age? If anyone would also like to give other differences in the two, feel free. I'm not super educated on Superman or anything.
