Why are superman and lex luthor on first name basis?

I've been watching Justice league for nostalgia's sake, but don't remember all of the history between superman and lex luthor. But in episode Injustice for All in season 1 of justice league, superman calls lex by his first name. Were they friends at some point? I don't recall them being anything but enemies...
